When it comes to posing lifestyle newborn photography sessions, things don’t need to be overly complicated or involve a bunch of different types of props. After years of experience I’ve learned to keep things simple. Newborn sessions are a beautiful opportunity for new parents to have their unique and special connection captured in the most intimate of settings – at home. For me, it’s all about capturing that timeless bond between parents and their newborn in a way that they will remember as true to life for years to come. Those blissful in between moments are just as important as the more staged portraits.

1. Get Cozy By A Window
I just love photographing in bedrooms because of their soft ambiance and opportunity to use natural light. Backlight can sometimes be tricky, but when used properly can yield amazing results. I like getting Mom and Dad to cozy up with baby by a window and capturing their profiles. This intimate shot always perfectly captures the love blossoming between parents and their sweet newborn.

2. Snuggle Up Baby in Their First Blanket
There is nothing quite like the magic of the first few weeks at home with your newborn. It’s full of firsts – swaddling your baby for the first time, showing your baby their nursery for the first time, introducing your baby to your pets for the first time, and the list goes on…Not mention introducing them to things like their first baby blanket or stuffed animal that will soon become family treasures. Instead of bringing props with me I love incorporating these special items into lifestyle newborn sessions! It makes prep easy and the images all the more meaningful.

3. Don’t Be Afraid To Get Silly
Newborn sessions don’t have to be serious! In fact, I absolutely love it when things get a little silly. Moments of play only add to the fun and magic of having your first family photography session with your newborn. Wiggle, dance, jump, and let all of the giggle out! The candid smiles that result are all the more precious than anything staged could ever be.

4. Story Time
Story time is a lovely family activity to work into lifestyle newborn sessions. It’s a perfect way to dynamically pose especially if the family you are working with has older brothers and sisters. Not only does it keep all of the kids engaged, but it also creates a relaxed, low pressure environment to photograph in. Plus you can use this trick anywhere, whether the session is taking place at home or outdoors!

5. Have A Family Cuddle Puddle
Last but certainly not least, one of my favourite ways to pose during newborn sessions is getting everyone to cuddle! Snuggling with your newborn is one of the most magical and precious things ever. Give them kisses, let their head rest on your shoulder, squeeze their tiny feet, and cradle them in your arms. Your love will shine through the images!
